Dhamma School (Daham Pasala)
A Dhamma School, commonly known in Sri Lanka as Daham Pasala, is an important institution that provides religious and moral education to Buddhist children. Usually conducted at Buddhist temples on Sunday mornings, Dhamma Schools aim to teach the principles of Buddhism while nurturing discipline, compassion, and good character among young students. These schools play a significant role in preserving Buddhist traditions and cultural values in Sri Lankan society.
The concept of Dhamma School education in Sri Lanka dates back to the late nineteenth century, when Buddhist leaders and monks sought to strengthen Buddhist education during a period of social and cultural change. Since then, thousands of Dhamma Schools have been established across the country, from large urban temples to small rural villages. Most are organized and supervised by temple monks, with volunteer teachers who dedicate their time to guiding children in Buddhist teachings.
Students usually attend Dhamma School once a week, typically on Sundays, dressed in white as a symbol of purity and respect. Lessons are structured according to graded syllabi, beginning with simple teachings for young children and progressing to more advanced topics for older students. The curriculum often includes the life of the Buddha, key Buddhist teachings such as the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path, Jataka stories, Buddhist history, and ethical conduct. Students are also encouraged to practice meditation, participate in religious observances, and learn Buddhist chanting.
Beyond religious instruction, Dhamma Schools also help shape students into responsible members of society. Teachers emphasize values such as kindness, honesty, patience, respect for parents and elders, and care for the environment. Activities such as Vesak celebrations, Bhakti Gee singing, Dhamma competitions, and community service projects further enrich the learning experience and strengthen the bond between temples and local communities.
For many Sri Lankan families, sending children to Dhamma School is considered an important part of upbringing. It provides a space where children learn not only about religion but also about cultural identity and moral responsibility. In a rapidly modernizing society, Dhamma Schools continue to play a vital role in maintaining spiritual awareness and guiding younger generations toward a balanced and ethical way of life.
