Pol Mudda
Pol Mudda (???? ?????) is a traditional Sri Lankan food item made primarily from grated coconut and rice flour. It is a simple yet hearty preparation that reflects the island’s rural culinary traditions. Typically, the grated coconut is mixed with rice flour, a pinch of salt, and sometimes finely chopped onions or green chilies for added flavor. The mixture is then shaped into small round balls and steamed until cooked through.
Pol Mudda is often enjoyed as a breakfast or light meal, usually served with lunu miris (spicy onion and chili paste) or pol sambol. In some regions, people also eat it with a touch of kiri hodi (mild coconut milk curry), enhancing its taste and richness.
This humble dish symbolizes the deep connection between Sri Lankan cuisine and the coconut — a staple ingredient in almost every meal on the island. Pol Mudda is valued not just for its simplicity and nutrition but also for its cultural significance as a food that has nourished generations.
